Maternal Death Remains a Challenge in Liberia: Says Dr. Sogunro

The Country representative of UNFPA in Liberia, Dr. Remi Sogunro, has alarmed that the issue of maternal death in Liberia and the world at large remains a major challenge. According to him, since 1990, there has been 45% reduction in maternal death across the world, indicating that in the early 90s about 600 women used to die from maternal mortality yearly.

He made the statement on Tuesday, May 9, 2018 at the program making the annual celebration of world maternal health services held at the Monrovia City Hall, noting that statistics has proven that about 303,000 women and girls died from maternal mortality across the Globe annually.

In order to enhance the work of midwives in Liberia; he continued, there is a need to improve the health facilities across the country. Dr. Remi Sogunro noted that midwives are the back-bones to healthy family and maternal health, and as such their works need to be given serious attention to save guard the lives of women and children in Liberia and the world at large.

To ensure the reduction in maternal mortality and improve maternal health care, he said there should be empowerment for women, improved health facilities, quality care for pregnant women and new born babies among others.

UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, is the lead UN agency for delivering a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every birth is safe, and every young person’s potential is fulfilled. UNFPA expands the possibilities for women and young people to lead healthy and productive lives.

For her part, Liberia’s Health Minister, Dr. Willimena Jallah, lauded the midwives in Liberia and termed their hard work on Maternal and Newborn health services as a sacrifice for humanity. She used the occasion to disclose that the Ministry of health is devoted to making a change in the maternal health care in Liberia. She than added that there is a need for government to strengthen all health facilities to adequately cater to pregnant women and new born babies.

The Ministry of Health and Social Welfare is a government Ministry of the Republic of Liberia. Its current Minister, Dr. Willimena Jallah, succeeded Bernice Dahn.
